Residency interviews are one of a kind. They involve both formal and informal conversations and may even include facility tours with faculty members. This is as much your opportunity to assess the program as it is for the program to assess you. It’s your chance to determine whether or not you would like to include them in your rank order list (ROL).

Since CaRMS and ERAS have established a fair interview process, whether or not you’re matched heavily relies on your interview performance. Not only must you learn how to approach your interview preparation and interview day, you must also consider what steps to take following your interview.

Interview Formats

Traditional Interviews

In this format, applicants are typically interviewed by a single person. Depending on the program, interviewers could be faculty members, students, community members, or program directors. They can either ask a series of pre-planned questions or tailor the line of questioning to your experiences.

Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI)

MMIs consist of several stations where you’re given a prompt. These prompts are based on ethics, teamwork, communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution. After a few minutes, interviewers can pose follow-up questions.

Panel/Modified Personal Interview

Some schools use a panel interview format where applicants are assessed by a group. Others use a modified personal interview. In this format, applicants are assessed by several interviewers separately.
